Join us in exploring an exciting new activity where trails, rock, and ice converge, offering a one-of-a-kind experience of camping beside a Glacier. This adventure allows you to witness the untouched beauty of the Cagliero Sur Glacier, which has thrived for years due to its strategic orientation and the snow accumulation from the Neumayer, Cagliero, and Loma del Diablo hills. To the south, you'll marvel at the steep cliffs of the Thirty Anniversary hill and its jagged peaks, with the Devil's Tooth as a standout feature. Our itinerary includes accommodation, dinner, lunch, and breakfast.
Tour Description
If you select the WITH TRANSFERS option, we will begin collecting guests from El Chaltén hotels starting at 8:00 a.m., and then head towards Los Huemules Reserve. By 9:00 a.m., our adventure kicks off from the Visitor Center. We will embark on a 1.45-hour hike along the Diablo River, traversing a verdant lenga forest on a well-maintained path until we reach the Diablo Lagoon, situated at 770 meters above sea level. From this vantage point, you can admire the Cagliero Post, marking the beginning of the second stage of our journey. This part takes us beyond the boundaries of Los Huemules Reserve into private land known as Campo Gorra Blanca. Distance covered: 7 km - Elevation gain: 300 m
The second phase of our excursion involves navigating the northern edge of Laguna del Diablo. The terrain is relatively easy but uneven, leading us to the start of a Via Ferrata. This section features rock climbing areas of low difficulty, enhanced with steel cables and artificial steps to ensure a secure and autonomous experience using harnesses and specially designed safety ropes. Before commencing this segment, our guides will equip participants with the necessary gear and provide safety instructions. As you gain confidence with the equipment, the journey becomes increasingly enjoyable, transforming this segment into an adventure of its own. As we ascend, the views of Diablo Lagoon and its surrounding valley improve. It takes roughly an hour and a half to reach the Glacier Viewpoint, where we can marvel at the untouched Cagliero Sur Glacier, located at 950 meters above sea level. A short walk from the viewpoint leads us to the glacier's forefront, where guides will help fit crampons to the hikers' boots. Distance covered: 4 km - Elevation gain: 400 meters
The third part of our itinerary involves walking and trekking on the glacier itself. If weather permits, we will enjoy lunch on the glacier. The average glacier exploration lasts about 3 hours, with opportunities for ice climbing, depending on weather conditions and the group's physical readiness. In the afternoon, we return to the Vivac Cagliero shelter to savor a hot drink while gazing at the glacier. Dinner will be served in the evening, followed by rest in our Vivac Dome, which accommodates 6 beds.
In the morning, after breakfast and before lunch, we will start our return journey. We will retrace our steps along the same Via Ferrata to the Base Dome, then proceed on a hike through the Green and Blue lagoon path, unveiling new landscapes and offering views of the North face of Cerro Fitz Roy. The scheduled meet-up time for the transfer back to El Chaltén is 5:30 p.m., with arrival at the hotels around 6:30 p.m.
